Pre-wedding Photography Shoot at Fairlawns Hotel: Beth & Matt

One thing you learn very quickly when working in the wedding industry is that every couple is unique. It's one of the main aspects Toby and I try and capture in our photography. This difference is evident in all the ways various couples react and interact in front of our cameras. So that it's not an overwhelming experience the first time we’re photographing you, it's usually myself (Phil) who will join you on your pre-wedding / engagement shoot. We like to work you up to two photographers gradually!

I very recently met up with Beth and Matt at the Fairlawns Hotel for their pre-wedding shoot. It had been raining all morning, but luckily in the afternoon the weather had improved. After a sit down to run through the couple’s plans for their big day, we headed outside to take some photos. It became evident very quickly how they react and interact when I'm taking photos of them; lots of giggling. If I'm honest that's my favourite type of couple to photograph. Not only do I capture loads of smiles and laughter, but it means that they are having fun.

I often offer to give subtle direction and ideas for couples to try out. It’s not posing, more ways of interacting with each other. You can’t see yourself when your photo is being taken, so you can’t always tell if what you’re doing is working for you. But giggles always work, they are foolproof. It meant that rather than spending more time practising, we could turn their pre-wedding shoot into a family shoot instead. Their son Freddie was with us, and being a natural born poser he jumped in on the action. Matt’s mum and Dad were with us too, but they were saving themselves for the photos on the wedding day. I presume this is because they are already pros in front of a camera.

I wanted to share a small selection from their shoot, especially the brilliant ones featuring Freddie. Sorry Matt and Beth, it’s all about your son, just as it should be.
